Founder
Steve’s entire career has been in financial services. He spent nearly 25 years in the industry before launching Refined Retirement.
By founding Refined Retirement, he committed himself to helping his clients address these needs head-on. And he developed the Refined Retirement Review, the firm’s proprietary financial planning process, as a framework for comprehensively addressing the relevant pieces of each client’s retirement puzzle: income, investment, tax, healthcare, and legacy planning. In order to bring all these pieces together into a cohesive plan, Steve coordinates with professionals in each area, including any professionals his clients already have on their teams for this purpose.
Prior to founding Refined Retirement, Steve served in several leadership positions within financial services firms. He formed Cohort Capital Advisors in 2006 and served as President until merging the firm with American Financial Services in 2014. At American Financial Services, he was Chief Investment Officer.
Steve began his career in financial services in Investment Analyst and Account Executive roles. These positions gave him experience in the research, selection, and monitoring of investment managers, mutual funds, and other investment vehicles. He also provided support services related to investments and financial planning.
In 2007, Steve earned his Accredited Investment Fiduciary designation. This professional certification is given to individuals who can demonstrate they have met the educational, competence, conduct, and ethical standards to carry out a fiduciary standard of care and serve the best interests of their clients.
Steve earned a bachelor’s from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, where he majored in both accounting and finance.
Basketball Junkie
Continuous learning, sports, and community are Steve’s biggest passions. And they have presented as recurring – and sometimes overlapping – themes throughout his life.
He married his wife Shelly in 1998, who inspired his love of lifelong learning. While raising their daughters Leah and Maya, Steve had the opportunity to learn about their primary hobbies of volleyball and dance, two activities that fell outside his original sports sphere of basketball.
He’s been an NC State Wolfpack fan since he was young, which may have provided a little bit of extra incentive for his family’s decision to relocate from Western Pennsylvania to Raleigh, NC, in 2023. He enjoys living in the heart of Atlantic Coast Conference basketball territory and attending as many games as possible.
Regardless of where he’s coming home from – be it a basketball game, dinner out at one of the tremendous restaurants in North Carolina’s Triangle area, or a trip to visit with clients – he says it’s hard to beat the feeling of being welcomed home by the family’s dogs, cockapoo Snickers and yellow lab Carmie.
As for community involvement, Steve has sought opportunities to give back throughout his life. He has coached girls’ youth basketball, served more than 20 years as Treasurer for the Neshannock Lions Club, and held a position on the PA Lions Club Investment Committee.
